There’s a principle for war laid down in Deuteronomy 20:8 that was applied in Gideon’s day. God ‘thinned the herd’ of Gideon’s strike force using this; “Who is a man that is afraid and fainthearted? Let him depart and return to his house, so that he might not make his brothers’ heart melt like his heart.”
When it came time for battle God didn’t want timid or weak-kneed individuals engaging the enemy, because He knew this would affect the rest of the soldiers and the mission before them.
We find ourselves, not in a cultural war, but in a “full-scale assault against Christianity and the followers of Christ.” (1) It’s our duty, win or lose, live or die, to be vigilant and defend our faith and liberities.
It would be nice if Christians stepped up to the plate and acted in a manner that our forefathers did. Men such as Jonas Clark, Peter Muhlenberg and James Caldwell.
Too many have been intimidated by the myth of separation of church and state not found in the Constitution, or any other founding document. Dr. Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, said, “No president in history has launched an attack on religious liberty like President Obama. If pastors remain AWOL on this issue like they have on others, we will lose the war for religious freedom that our forefathers gave their life’s blood to provide.” (2)
Another pastor put it this way; “Retreating from the battle is teason in the Court of Heaven.” (3)
However, I surmise many have already headed home. Maybe they should, and leave the fight to those ready to engage.
