“War forces us to examine the very foundations of life itself.” Dr. Peter Marshall
A friend of mine who enjoys a distinguished career in the military told me a while back that the U.S. military is at war, while the rest of America is at the mall. How sad. Read the rest of this entry »

A while back my one and only cruise was coincidently on the Carnival Triumph. I enjoyed that voyage immensely and would have no problem booking passage with Carnival again or on the Triumph (provided if it can be salvaged after what just occurred). Read the rest of this entry »

“The time is now near at hand which must probably determine, whether Americans are to be, Freemen, or Slaves; whether they are to have any property they can call their own; whether their Houses, and Farms, are to be pillaged and destroyed, and they consigned to a State of Wretchedness from which no human efforts will probably deliver them.
The fate of unborn Millions will now depend, under God, on the Courage and Conduct of this army — Our cruel and unrelenting Enemy leaves us no choice but a brave resistance, or the most abject submission; this is all we can expect — We have therefore to resolve to conquer or die: Our own Country’s Honor, all call upon us for a vigorous and manly exertion, and if we now shamefully fail, we shall become infamous to the whole world.
Let us therefore rely upon the goodness of the Cause, and the aid of the supreme Being, in whose hands Victory is, to animate and encourage us to great and noble Actions — The Eyes of all our Countrymen are now upon us, and we shall have their blessings, and praises, if happily we are the instruments of saving them from the tyranny meditated against them. Let us therefore animate and encourage each other, and shew the whole world, that a Freeman contending for LIBERTY on his own ground is superior to any slavish mercenary on earth. ~George Washington

So, who cares about a battle in the “War to end all wars,” fought over ninety-plus years ago? What do the names Charles White Whittlesey, George G. McMurtry, and Nelson M. Holderman mean to a generation, including many adults, ‘dumbed down’ by reality t.v.? Probably nothing.
In the fall of 1918, as part of the Muesse – Argonne Offensive, Major Charles Whittlesey and the men of New York’s 77th Liberty Division were ordered to take the Binarville-Charleveaux Mill Road, but in the process found themselves surrounded. Read the rest of this entry »

“Attention to Orders,” said the Army sergeant, standing behind the pulpit with a flag draped casket of yet another soldier killed in Afghanistan a few feet in front of him.
Those in the audience currently serving in the military snapped to attention upon hearing the command – they knew what it meant. The sergeant then proceeded to read the medals that were awarded posthumously to this fine young man.
