We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human Passions unbridled by morality and Religion. Avarice, Ambition, Revenge or Gallantry, would break the strongest Cords of our Constitution as a Whale goes through a Net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
President John Adams made this statement while addressing the military on October 11, 1798
What does this mean to modern-day American’s running around with their face plastered into a phone looking for Pokeman?
I went to the old sage, Noah Webster, and got his definition for the words.
Moral – The law of God as the standard by which their character is determined; conformed to rules of right, or The Divine Law respecting social duties (1)
Religious – godly, loving and reverencing the Supreme Being; obeying His laws and precepts (2)
“How incredibly succinct. In two sentences, Mr. Adams managed to sum up America’s proper operating instructions.
Though the matter could not be more clear, over time, this simple proclamation of truth has obviously come to be regarded as nothing more than opinion, rendering an absolute as something that is negotiable, if not infinitely flexible.
Unfortunately, as it generally goes with absolutes, they are anything but flexible. Sure, we can choose to ignore them, or simply twist them to mean whatever may happen to suit us at the moment, but we do so at our own peril.
So why does our system seem broken — why does our government no longer work on our behalf? Adams’s simple equation provides the answer.
Our postmodern society would do well to view Adams’s brilliant insight as a big red warning label affixed to the nation’s founding documents. Just as with those ubiquitous labels found on any product imaginable — “Do not stand on top rung”; “Do not use hair dryer while sitting in water” — Adams is pointing out what is painfully obvious.
“Do not use this to govern any but a moral and religious people!” Otherwise, not only does the system not operate properly, but to operate it at all is downright dangerous!” (3)
Why do we think things will turn around after we’ve raised a generation that has had no instruction on our godly heritage?
An overwhelming majority of people holding office, at all levels, have never been taught what God did for America.
It doesn’t excuse the fact they’ve put us in the trick bag because of the policies they’ve implemented or accepted. It’s because they’ve tossed out the “operating instructions” – The Bible.
Christian’s also have to share in the blame. Many have thrown in the towel like Elijah did, and would rather shirivel up and die than preserve what was handed down.
I’ve heard a number of “pious” people, some from my church, proudly say they can’t support someone like Donald Trump.
Let me get this straight; you’ll stay home on election day and turn the country over to a career-criminal who’s done nothing to become president?
On top of that, she’s a liar and has the blood of at least four American’s on her hands. Clinton can’t be trusted!
Granted, Trump was not the best choice. I was hoping it would be Ted Cruz, but Mitch McConnell and other power-players in the GOP are working endlessly to rid the party of conservative Christians – the moral and religious people President Adams spoke of.
Things have become so corrupted, because of the huge role parties play, that we’ve been told who the candidates will be without any substantive discussion on platforms
Maybe, just maybe, God has raised the window slightly and giving us one more chance after Trump selected Governor Mike Pence, a Christian conservative, as his running mate.
Pence is an honorable man and would be a breath of fresh air. I hope he lets loose and tells the nation a spiritual revival is needed before we go under for good.
He’s screwed up on some things, however, I’d rather have these two guys than a known thug.
If you sit it out, it’s on you.
Also, consider taking time to vote in person instead of by absentee ballot.
Unless your elderly or unable to get around easily, casting your vote in person is one way to eliminate fraud.
If a kid can pick up a rifle and sit in some rat-infested FOB overseas while eating their meal out of a plastic bag, then you can get off the couch and go vote.
Is that too much to ask?
